Let's talk about that liquid gold everyone is chasing these days: beef tallow.
If you've never used beef tallow in skin care, but you hear people talking about it, you probably have a LOT of questions. The first thing you might ask (the first thing I asked) is "but isn't it...oil?! You're telling me to just put OIL on my face?" And my answer would be, ABSOLUTELY.
Tallow is rendered from beef fat. For lotion and whipped tallow products, Sudzy Mama begins with locally sourced suet, carefully rendered in small batches to remove all water and impurities — supporting local farmers and maximizing nose-to-tail use. For our soap products, we often use trim fat, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
The reason beef tallow works so well for skin care products is because it's not just any random oil - the molecular composition of the beef fat is so similar to our own that your body "knows" what to do with the tallow. The fatty acid profile closely mirrors human skin sebum. We call this biocompatibility. This makes the tallow absorb into your skin, rather than just sitting on top of it. Oil on top of the skin is what can cause breakouts - not because it's oil, but because it's the wrong kind of oil. Tallow is different. Tallow is:
- Rich in fat-soluble, skin-supporting vitamins: A, D, E, and K.
- High in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is helpful for anti-inflammatory properties.
- Contains stearic and oleic acids to help your skin repair its barrier.
- Similar in lipid structure to your own skin, reducing irritation and increasing absorption.
- Gentle on extra dry or sensitive skin
- Helpful for locking in moisture to improve the health of eczema-prone skin
- Clean and sustainable
- Effective without manufactured additives
You may have heard people say "it smells like beef!" To be honest, there is a slight scent to unfragranced whipped tallow (we offer tallow scented to match your favorite Sudzy Mama soap!). However, properly rendered and prepared tallow has no more "smell" than some commercial unscented lotions. The smell of the tallow isn't BAD - it's just unfamiliar to many people, and it's slight enough that you will only notice it at application time.
Sudzy Mama's first venture into natural skin care - years before a business was ever considered - began with a coconut oil-based sugar scrub. But as time has gone on and Sudzy Mama has studied, trialed, adjusted, studied more and trialed again, beef tallow has become the shining star of almost every recipe. Every oil has its strengths, and many oils have found purpose in wonderful Sudzy Mama products. But beef tallow's versatility and compatibility brings it to the front of the list over and over again.
So the real question isn't "why tallow?" It's "why did we ever stop?" Generations of people cared for their skin with simple, animal-derived fats long before synthetic emulsifiers and petroleum derivatives became the norm. Tallow isn't a trend. It's a return. And we think once you try it, you'll wonder what took you so long. If you're wondering where to start, we highly recommend Grace's Face Balm - our most popular whipped tallow.
