In Why Tallow?, we talked about what tallow is and why your skin "knows" what to do with it. Today let's get practical. Because the question I hear most isn't "what is it?" It's "okay, but is it good for my skin?"
Short answer: for most people, yes. Longer answer: it depends a little on your skin, and a lot on how you use it.
Tallow for Dry Skin
This is where tallow shines brightest. Dry skin needs more than a quick hit of water-based moisture that evaporates by lunchtime. It needs rich lipids that help it hold on to moisture. A small amount of whipped tallow on slightly damp skin works beautifully here, especially on hands, elbows, heels, and faces that feel tight after washing.
Tallow for Sensitive and Eczema-Prone Skin
If your skin reacts to everything, simpler is usually better. Tallow products can be made with very short ingredient lists, and unscented options skip fragrance entirely. Many people with eczema-prone skin find tallow helps lock in moisture and calm that tight, itchy feeling. As with anything new, patch test first: dab a little on your inner arm and wait a day.
"Won't It Make Me Break Out?"
This is the big one, especially for oily or acne-prone skin. The worry makes sense, since we've all been told oil equals breakouts. But the real culprit is usually the wrong kind of oil, or too much of it. The trick with tallow is to use less than you think. A pea-sized amount covers your whole face. If you're oily or acne-prone, try it at night only for a couple of weeks and see how your skin responds.
Tallow for Mature Skin
As we age, our skin produces less of its own oil, and that dry, papery feeling creeps in. Replenishing those lipids with something that closely resembles them can help skin look softer and feel more comfortable. Tallow balm is a lovely final step in an evening routine.
How to Use Tallow (So It Actually Works)
- Start small. Warm a tiny amount between your fingertips until it melts.
- Apply to damp skin. Tallow seals in moisture, so give it some moisture to seal.
- Smooth, don't rub. Gently smooth the tallow over your skin and give it a few minutes to absorb. There's no need to work it in.
- Make it a bedtime ritual. Applying tallow right before bed gives your skin plenty of time to absorb it without makeup or environmental irritants getting in the way.
- Be patient. Give your skin two to three weeks to adjust before you decide.
